The Origins of Options Food Pantry

Options Pantry came into existence in 2018, thanks to the vision of Devin Hines, a counselor at Options Noblesville. It all began with the simple concept of providing small bags of snacks to students in need. Initially, the pantry operated out of the teacher’s lounge, with limited awareness among the school community. However, it quickly gained traction as the school recognized the pressing need to address food insecurities.

As the need for the pantry became more apparent, Options Pantry outgrew its original space and expanded, both in terms of physical presence and in the extent of its impact. The following year, Elizabeth Essig took over the pantry and it was moved to the computer room. Options Schools Food Pantry then forged a crucial partnership with the local organization, Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank, to ensure comprehensive resources are available to students and their families. The Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank plays a pivotal role in supporting not just the Options Schools Food Pantry, but more than 40 other pantries in Hamilton County.

Services and Support Offered by the Food Pantry

Thanks to this partnership, the pantry now receives regular food donations, ranging from breakfast items to fresh produce, meat, and more. Elizabeth Essig mentions, “We pick up anywhere from 400 to 700 pounds of food, depending on our stock. If we’ve run low, it might be around 600 or 700 pounds.”

Elizabeth also emphasized the importance of offering a diverse range of food items, stating, “We provide all the food groups, including breakfast items, fruits, vegetables, protein, and additional offerings like meat items or canned meat items.” This comprehensive approach guarantees that students have access to nutritious meals that support their overall well-being. The Options Schools Pantry goes beyond providing meals by offering additional essential items, such as deodorant, shampoo, ChapStick, clothes, and more. Understanding the diverse needs of students and their families, the pantry aims to support their overall well-being by ensuring access to hygiene products and clothing.

Some Additional Offerings for Students & Families Include:

  • Thanksgiving meals
  • Prom dresses & suits
  • Tailoring clothing
  • Outfits for senior presentations

Student Involvement in the Pantry

At Options Schools, student involvement is key to the pantry’s success. Through senior service learning projects and creative fundraising, students play a vital role in supporting the pantry. Their initiatives include establishing a clothing boutique within the pantry, organizing fundraisers, and even creating cookbooks from pantry items. These innovative projects not only benefit the pantry but also empower students to make a positive impact in their community.

“Instead of it just being a food and clothes pantry, my vision of it is anything we can do to help our students.”

The student’s involvement in these initiatives goes beyond typical volunteer work, showcasing their commitment to creating a nurturing and supportive environment. Their creativity and dedication not only strengthen the pantry’s impact but also foster empathy and empowerment among students. This active engagement with the pantry reflects Options Schools’ unwavering commitment to understanding and nurturing every student’s unique needs and potential.

Impact and Future Plans

The Options Schools Food Pantry has made a significant impact since its establishment, serving as a vital resource for Indiana students and their families. With positive feedback and gratitude from the community, the pantry’s transformative effect is evident. Looking ahead, there are plans to expand the pantry further and offer additional support, such as providing summer pickups at different school locations. This expansion aims to meet the ongoing needs of students and ensure that no child goes hungry during breaks in the school calendar.

We invite you to get involved by donating, volunteering, or spreading awareness about the pantry’s impact. Together, we can empower students and create a brighter future for all.
