What Is a Charter School?

Over two decades ago, the Charter School Law passed, and Options became one of the first of five charter schools in Indiana in 2002. Public charter schools are independent, public, and tuition-free and allow for a more innovative, engaging student experience.

Research has strongly shown that charter schools teach individuals with anxiety and schedule constraints in a more effective, fulfilling way, along with low-income students, minority and non-English speaking students.

Did you know charter school students have a greater likelihood of graduating, pursuing higher education, and jumpstarting a fulfilling career? It’s true!

Our Approach

Once students begin their Options journey, they will meet with an advisor to create an academic plan that will destine them for success. All coursework adheres to Indiana Standards — it’s our curriculum structure that truly makes the difference — students have a voice and are able to learn by finding the method that works best for them.

We offer a variety of education programs & platforms, including online learning. There are three components to our education model:

Foundations for Learning

Our students are required to complete 25 credits in core academic areas (English, math, science, social studies, PE, health, and select electives) to receive a Core 40 diploma. We work hands-on with every student to ensure they demonstrate proficiency in each subject.

Practical Applications

Later, students complete a targeted 90 hours of Career Field Experience through observation and internship opportunities. We make it a point to consistently communicate with our students, asking questions like, “Where do you see yourself succeeding, and how can we help you get there?”

Senior Institute & Career and Technical Education

At the culmination of their Options academic experience, students must showcase the real-world skills they’ve obtained by completing a service-based learning project, almost entirely independently.

The 4 Project Guidelines — all projects must:

  1. Be Interesting to the student.
  2. Benefit a community.
  3. Demonstrate prior learning.
  4. Offer the chance to learn something new.
